Most motorcycle problems do not appear suddenly. They build up quietly over weeks while nobody is looking, and then present themselves at the least convenient moment. The good news is that catching them early requires very little — mostly just the habit of actually looking.
Before every ride
This takes under a minute once it becomes routine.
- Tyres — check pressure and glance over the tread for embedded stones or damage
- Brakes — squeeze both levers, feel for anything spongy or inconsistent
- Lights — headlight, brake light, indicators
- Chain — a quick look for obvious slack or visible grime
Every week
Set aside ten minutes, ideally with the bike on its stand.
- Inspect chain tension and condition properly, rotating the wheel through a full turn
- Check engine oil level
- Look over exposed metal for early surface rust
- Test that the horn works and controls move freely
- Check for loose fasteners, particularly on frequently vibrating components
Chain care is the highest-value habit
If you only maintain one thing consistently, make it the chain. It is the component that transmits every bit of power to the road, it is fully exposed to dust, water and grit, and it is the one most riders neglect longest.
The routine does not change: clean the chain to remove accumulated dirt, allow it to dry, then lubricate to reduce friction and protect against wear. Never lubricate over grime.
Keep components clean, not just the bodywork
Plenty of riders wash the tank and fairings religiously while ignoring everything underneath. Deposits build up on the components that actually affect how the bike runs.
Throttle-body components, for example, accumulate dirt, oil and deposits over time. Ride Armor Throttle Body Cleaner is designed for cleaning suitable components during routine vehicle maintenance. Switch off the engine and follow the OEM procedure, access the throttle-body area as required, apply the cleaner to suitable surfaces, allow deposits to loosen and wipe appropriately, then let everything dry completely before reassembly.
If you are not comfortable with this, it is a reasonable thing to leave to a workshop — the product is designed for professional and maintenance use.
Deal with rust immediately
Surface rust is easy to remove and easy to ignore. Ignoring it is how it becomes permanent damage. The moment you see it on a bolt head, bracket or exposed metal face, treat it. Ten minutes then saves a component later.
Build the habit, not the checklist
None of this is complicated or expensive. It is a pre-ride glance, a weekly ten minutes, and cleaning the chain when it looks dirty rather than when something goes wrong.
Riders who do this get machines that start reliably, feel smoother, hold their value and last considerably longer. That is the entire secret, and there isn’t a more advanced version of it.
